So I just got back from a walk. The one constant thing about me is that I will walk every day, any day, anytime or hour. That aside, Uganda is going thru a very difficult time with the 2nd wave of COVID-19. We have been hit hard and had to lockdown again…it is super crazy!!!
Indoors is not my thing, I do not like staying put or in one place for long. I easily get distracted and that explains my multiple movements while in the office. I love to see, explore, adventure and experience new and exciting things….Now I cannot do any of that physically and unfortunately my feet do not seem to understand that. I have contextualized it mentally but not entirely in the physical sense.
I am the kind who gets excited when I hear the word “trip”. It doesn’t matter how many times I have been to a place, I look forward to shopping, packing my bags, looking up places to visit, seeing new things, meeting people. My dad used to say that he thinks my feet itch….hehehehehe!!!
I even enjoy the journey to work. Unfortunately, in just fifty steps, I am done with my apartment. The Government has decided that we need a movement permit from the Ministry of Works to move within the Kampala Metropolitan area, vehicles are being impounded and only 10% of staff are allowed in the offices. It is a necessary step and I am grateful for the steps that the state has taken to keep us safe.
These are my top ways of making it thru the long days;
- Scheduling
I still use my work diary at home and plan what I will work on. It helps to hype me up for the day and get me out of bed and going too. I only handle three assignments to completion per day, with breaks in between. I go for an evening walk and if laziness crops in, or the sky decides to bless us …the rooftop is my fortress…I let myself get drenched in rain or sunshine. One of the things I never miss is the lunchtime request hour on Capital FM… forever a fan as I dance to the tunes…
- Discipline
A no brainer for me. Even while working at home, I do get up at the same time and have chosen to keep my routine regardless. I still pray, exercise, take a shower at the same time like I would if I was leaving the house. Then I go back to bed for about an hour and wake up at the time that I would be arriving at the office…so I have extra time to dream. I have a thirty minutes read and also keep the television off until the end of the day…it gives me something to look forward to on a daily as I catch up on my favorite shows.
- Gratitude Board
Thanks to Jumia I got a blackboard, and every single morning I write what I am grateful for. It is a real blessing to be alive!
- Life Skills
My Saturday’s always had a salon visit somewhere in between, but because of the situation, I filled the gap by learning how to do my own hair and I cannot believe myself. The most challenging part was getting the rollers on, my hands would get super tired. However, with time I got better. I also looked up old recipes and made my own creations too.
- Take care of myself
Self care is without a doubt super important. I drink water, eat my vegetables, fruits and meals take time off to just think and let’s just say my bed has enjoyed me as much as I have enjoyed it. I discovered the magic of shea butter and man ohhh man!!! Uganda is truly one of a kind.
A bonus point is that I keep up to date with the news and all updates on the corona virus.
As we await for life to unwind…..that’s working for me!
